SUMMER STEM INSTITUTE FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS

The Alabama Transportation Institute (ATI) hosted a Summer Transportation Institute for middle school students at Greensboro Middle School, June 24-27. The three-day institute was designed to showcase the integral role that STEM plays in the transportation industry. ATI researchers and GMS teachers engaged 25 students in STEM activities that incorporated project-based and hands-on experiential learning, carefully curated to foster STEM identity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Dr. Hope Drummonds-Whiteside, STEM Education Research Specialist, stated, "This institute provides a unique opportunity for students to see the practical applications of STEM in the field of transportation." The program focused on illustrating how these disciplines are critical to the development, innovation, and efficiency of transportation systems. Participants were given insights into how STEM drives advancements in areas such as smart infrastructure, autonomous vehicles, sustainable transport solutions, and cutting-edge logistics, thereby emphasizing the importance of STEM education in shaping the future of transportation.

In addition, students had the opportunity to delve into various careers within the transportation industry, gaining a deeper understanding of the diverse roles and opportunities available in this essential sector. They explored the different pathways one can take, from logistics and supply chain management to roles in engineering, infrastructure development, and vehicle technology, providing them with a comprehensive view of the industry's scope and significance. Mr. Anthony Sanders, Greensboro Middle School Principal, added, "We are thrilled to offer our students such an enriching experience that broadens their understanding of transportation careers and technologies.”

The institute not only aims to inspire students to pursue careers in transportation but also strives to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to tackle future challenges in this ever-evolving field. By exposing students to cutting-edge technologies and real-world applications, the program helps pave the way for innovative solutions and advancements in transportation.

This institute was made possible through the collaborative efforts of ATI and its partners, including the Center for Regional & Rural Connected Communities (CR2C2), educational institutions, government agencies, and industry stakeholders. These partnerships are committed to empowering young minds and building a brighter future for the transportation workforce in Alabama and beyond.
