Interested in CR2C2 activities and engagement opportunities?
In collaboration with City of Greensboro and North Carolina Department of Transportation, this outdoor smart intersection test facility is created at E Market & Dudley and enables:
Advanced Sensing Technologies
The intersection is equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced sensors, including LiDAR, radar, and vision systems. These sensors enable continuous, high-resolution monitoring of real-world traffic conditions, supporting accurate detection, tracking, and behavioral analysis of vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Advanced Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I)
The facility enables real-time communication between connected vehicles and roadway infrastructure. This capability elevates NCA&T’s autonomous and connected vehicle research by improving safety, efficiency, and situational awareness through direct infrastructure support.
Infrastructure-to-Everything (I2X)
The system supports communication between the intersection and all road users—including vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit—enabling safer and more intelligent interactions in complex urban environments.
Intersection Management & Operations
The platform supports advanced intersection management applications such as first-responder signal priority, crash data collection and modeling, congestion monitoring, multimodal coordination, and performance evaluation of traffic control strategies.
Advanced Research Capabilities
Data from the intersection will be streamed in real time to the Engineering Research and Innovation Complex (ERIC) at NCA&T via high-performance wireless networking. This enables cutting-edge research in intersection management, data science, cybersecurity, connected and automated vehicles, transportation systems, and smart infrastructure.
Education & Workforce Development
Streamed and archived data will be integrated into coursework and student projects across Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Computational Data Science and Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering departments at NCA&T, providing hands-on learning with real-world data.
Outreach & Engagement
The facility will serve as a living laboratory for outreach activities, hosting professionals in traffic engineering, industry partners, college students, and K-12 learners. Planned activities include workshops, demonstrations, site tours, and community engagement events.
