SYNOPSIS

This research explores the use of telematics data to assess freight network resilience during significant disruptions, such as natural disasters and infrastructure failures. Focusing on case studies including the Oregon Forest Fires, Hurricane Florence, and the I-55 Mississippi River Bridge closure, the research analyzes freight movements before, during, and after these events. The findings highlight key patterns in route adaptations and recovery, providing valuable insights for transportation planners. The study emphasizes the importance of real-time data in developing reliable freight performance measures and improving infrastructure planning to enhance network resilience.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

David Lillo-Trynes is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in entrepreneurial and community-driven initiatives. Currently serving as Co-CEO at Spark Festival and Head of Community at Compass IoT, David focuses on leveraging connected car data to enhance urban development. In addition to these roles, David contributes as a volunteer board member for Youth in Motion Inc., supporting at-risk high school students, and co-founded the movement #ReligionShouldntHurt to raise awareness about the harms of certain religious experiences. Previously, David held key positions at the University of Technology Sydney, including Program Manager for UTS Startups and Project Lead for Startup Internships, fostering a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem. David is a co-founder of Rell & Co., a sustainable events company, and has experience in managing university teams at batyr. Educational accomplishments include a Master of Business Administration from the University of Technology Sydney and additional training at Academy Xi.

Dr. Hernandez research derives knowledge from social sciences and computational sciences to create meaningful solutions for problems in Transportation Safety, Freight Logistics, Transportation Systems Modeling, and Disaster Management. He blends the development of new science-based approaches with practical applications and implementation.

His current areas of research interest are: Transportation safety modeling of all modes encompassing crash countermeasures, crash and safety analysis, and statistical modeling; Use of large scale disaggregate data sets for developing strategic, tactical, and operational models and solution methods for problems that arise in the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary areas of transportation systems. He is also interested in behavioral issues in natural disasters such as in earthquakes, travel demand modeling, freight supply & demand modeling, and supply chain logistics modeling.

Dr. Hernandez methodological research interests and expertise are in the areas of statistical & econometric and mathematical modeling, including discrete choice analysis, and network flow analysis & optimization. Dr. Hernandez utilizes interdisciplinary modeling techniques to address issues at the intersection of multiple disciplines."

Han is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and an Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) Collaborating Scientist at the University of Tennessee (UT).

His fields of expertise and research interests include traffic engineering, application of advanced technologies to transportation, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), system modeling and simulations, traffic flow theory, traffic operations, transportation data and information systems, emergency evacuation and management, crash records and analysis, transportation logistics, operations research, and 3D visualizations.
