The Alabama Transportation Institute proudly hosted a successful Transportation Awareness Day at Hale County Middle School on February 19, 2025, aiming to inspire the next generation of transportation professionals. The event attracted 305 enthusiastic 6th to 9th-grade students, eager to explore the exciting world of transportation and STEM education.
The goal of the event was to raise awareness and foster interest in transportation-related careers, highlighting the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. Students had the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge technology and learn about the future of transportation through interactive stations focused on automated, connected, electric, shared, and safe emerging transportation technologies. These concepts were demonstrated through grade-appropriate educational activities.
Key partners included Kimley-Horn, the UA Office of Interdisciplinary STEM Education Research, the UA TRIP Lab, the UA Eco-Car Team, AMP, and the UA Battery Workforce Challenge Team. They provided hands-on demonstrations and insightful presentations, showcasing the latest advancements in transportation technology and the potential career paths available in this dynamic field.
"We are thrilled to see such a strong turnout and enthusiasm from the students," said Dr. Hope Drummonds-Whiteside, STEM Education Research Specialist at The Alabama Transportation Institute. "Our goal is to ignite a passion for STEM and transportation careers, and today's event has certainly achieved that.
