North Carolina A&T State University participated in the concluding year of AutoDrive Challenge II, held June 1–5, 2026, at Mcity in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Organized by General Motors (GM) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the competition brought together ten universities from the United States and Canada. Teams spent five years designing and developing autonomous vehicles, culminating in real-world testing and competition at Mcity, a dedicated autonomous vehicle testing facility in Michigan.
The NC A&T team consisted of 28 students who contributed to key areas of autonomous vehicle development, including sensor mounting and integration, perception, planning, localization, and control. Throughout the competition, the team had the opportunity to showcase its work, engage with other participating universities, and gain valuable experience in developing and testing autonomous driving systems.
The competition featured two main events: the Concept Design Presentation, in which teams presented their engineering approaches and supporting results, and the Dynamic Challenge, which evaluated autonomous driving capabilities through ride-sharing, localization, and construction-zone navigation scenarios.
Although the competition presented significant technical challenges, participation in AutoDrive Challenge II provided the NC A&T team with valuable hands-on experience in autonomous vehicle engineering, system integration, and collaborative problem-solving. The competition offered students an opportunity to apply their engineering knowledge, and gain practical experience in addressing real-world autonomous driving challenges.
The team’s participation in the concluding year of AutoDrive Challenge II demonstrated the dedication and collaborative efforts of its members. The experience underscored the value of hands-on engineering education in preparing future engineers to address complex challenges in autonomous systems and transportation technology.
