The Center for Regional and Rural Connected Communities (CR2C2) at North Carolina A&T State University concluded its participation in the 2026 North Carolina Transportation Summit, held October 26–28, 2026. The event brought together transportation professionals, researchers, industry leaders, and stakeholders to explore advancements and emerging opportunities in transportation.
Throughout the summit, CR2C2 showcased its ongoing research in connected and automated transportation systems. A major highlight of the exhibition was the opportunity for attendees to experience two live demonstrations featuring advanced transportation technologies developed and researched at N.C. A&T State University.
The first demonstration featured N.C. A&T's Smart Intersection Test Facility, located at the intersection of East Market and Dudley streets in Greensboro. Developed in collaboration with the City of Greensboro and the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the facility serves as a real-world testing environment for advanced transportation technologies designed to improve roadway safety and traffic operations.
Equipped with LiDAR, radar, and dedicated short-range communication technologies, the Smart Intersection collects and processes real-time traffic data to monitor vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. Its advanced sensing and communication systems support vehicle-to-infrastructure connectivity, traffic safety analytics, and the development of intelligent transportation solutions.
Led by Dr. Ali Al-Dabbagh and CR2C2 Director Dr. Ali Karimoddini, the live demonstration highlighted how these technologies can enhance traffic monitoring, improve situational awareness, and support connected and automated vehicles as they navigate complex roadway environments.
The second demonstration, led by Ph.D. student researcher Tienake Phuaboon, showcased the remote operation of an automated vehicle at N.C. A&T's North Campus Test Track, with on-site support from Dr. Prasenjit Ghorai and Dr. Tesfamichael Getahun.
Operating approximately 100 miles away from the automated vehicle, Phuaboon demonstrated how remote operation technology enables real-time communication between an automated vehicle and a remote operator. The demonstration simulated a road closure, allowing attendees to observe how the vehicle communicated with the remote operator and how control could be transferred between the automated driving system and the remote operator to navigate the unexpected roadway condition.
In addition to the live demonstrations, attendees visited CR2C2's exhibition to explore the Aggie Auto Pacifica, an automated vehicle supporting ongoing research. The exhibition also highlighted drone technologies and additional smart transportation research conducted through N.C. A&T's ACCESS Laboratory.
CR2C2 extends its sincere appreciation to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) for supporting the exhibition and the center's continued research efforts. The center also acknowledges the valuable support of the City of Greensboro, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), and the University Transportation Center (UTC) program.
CR2C2 thanks everyone who visited the exhibition, engaged with the research team, and participated in the live demonstrations. The center looks forward to continuing its collaborations and advancing innovative transportation solutions that improve safety, efficiency, and accessibility for communities across North Carolina and beyond.
