This presentation will discuss the collaborative, evidence-based effort to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions on Interstate 40 in the Pigeon River Gorge and on Interstate 26 near the North Carolina / Tennessee border. Jeff will discuss the research that has become the basis for recommendations to North Carolina DOT (NCDOT) and Tennessee DOT (TDOT) to mitigate wildlife-vehicle collisions. This includes infrastructure solutions including wildlife overpasses, underpasses, and strategically located wildlife fencing. In addition, Jeff will discuss efforts to secure funding from the North Carolina General Assembly and the U.S. Congress to fund infrastructure solutions.
